East Jakarta House Burns Down Due to Suspected Electrical Short Circuit While Owner Attends Funeral

JAKARTA — A house in Utan Kayu Selatan, Matraman, East Jakarta, caught fire early Friday morning (29 May 2026) around 3:30am WIB, suspected to be caused by an electrical short circuit. Abdul Wahid, Head of the Operations Section for East Jakarta’s Gulkarmat, stated that the house was unoccupied at the time of the incident. ‘The house was empty as the owner had gone to attend a funeral at his parents’ home,’ Wahid said in a WhatsApp message on Friday. ‘Neighbors reported the fire after noticing black smoke emanating from the kitchen,’ Wahid added. Wahid confirmed no injuries or fatalities occurred in the early Friday morning fire. He explained that his team received the fire report at 3:30am WIB and began initial firefighting at 3:41am WIB. The fire was contained by 4:15am WIB, with extinguishing operations concluding at 4:44am WIB.
