Jakarta — The East Jakarta municipal government, together with its apparatus at the district and sub-district levels, is conducting patrols of empty homes throughout the 2026 Lebaran mudik period (Hijri year 1447).

“I will emphasise again to the District Heads to coordinate at the district level with the District Police Chiefs and Military Sub-District Commanders regarding empty home patrols,” said East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin at the Mayor’s office on Thursday.

The municipality is also coordinating with sub-district officials and working with Village Security Cadres (Babinsa) and Community Police Cadres (Bhabinkamtibmas) as well as other community elements to conduct regular patrols.

This measure is being taken to anticipate potential criminal activity, particularly burglaries of empty homes abandoned by residents returning to their hometowns.

Additionally, Munjirin has instructed district and sub-district heads to strengthen cross-sector coordination to maintain security in the region during the Idul Fitri holiday. This step is deemed important given the large number of residential properties left vacant during the Lebaran mudik period.

Munjirin hopes that with regular patrols, the potential for criminal activity in East Jakarta can be reduced. He also emphasised that security measures have been communicated during preparedness briefings for the takbiran night (eve of Eid), Idul Fitri celebrations, and the 1447 Hijri/2026 holiday exodus.

During these briefings, he instructed district heads, sub-district heads, and Civil Police Units to strengthen coordination with police, military, and other relevant agencies.

“We request monitoring and surveillance of locations prone to gang violence, theft, and other public order disturbances,” Munjirin stated.

Beyond maintaining environmental security, East Jakarta municipal government is also appealing to residents to maintain order during the takbiran celebrations. This includes refraining from using firecrackers that could pose dangers or disturbances to neighbouring residents.

The city government hopes that cooperation between officials and the community will create a safe and conducive atmosphere during the mudik period through the Idul Fitri celebrations.

Previously, East Jakarta municipal government reminded residents to ensure electrical systems and cooking appliances are in safe condition before departing for their hometowns. According to Munjirin, negligence in turning off electrical equipment or cookers is often a cause of house fires when properties are left unoccupied for extended periods.

Therefore, Munjirin stressed the importance of residents conducting thorough checks of electrical installations and kitchen equipment before leaving their homes.

“Residents planning to mudik for Lebaran are urged to be more vigilant about the potential for fires in homes left unattended,” Munjirin said.

Furthermore, Munjirin reminded residents to ensure all doors and windows are properly locked and valuables are safely stored. This is important to prevent potential criminal activity while homes remain unoccupied. He also suggested that residents entrust their house keys to trusted neighbours or relatives so that homes can be monitored while residents are away.
