East Jakarta City Government Encourages Positive Youth Activities During Ramadhan
Jakarta — The East Jakarta City Government is encouraging all sectors of society to increase positive activities for youth during the holy month of Ramadhan.
“The importance of increasing positive activities for youth during Ramadhan is to prevent brawls and various other negative actions,” said East Jakarta Mayor Munjirin in Jakarta on Monday.
According to him, Ramadhan represents an opportune moment to direct the energy and creativity of the younger generation towards more beneficial pursuits.
Moreover, potential tensions between residents, particularly involving youth, tend to increase at night, especially after Tarawih prayers until the pre-dawn meal period.
“Usually, in Ramadhan there are vulnerable times, especially after Tarawih until the pre-dawn meal. If not filled with positive activities, young people can easily be influenced by harmful things like brawling,” Munjirin said.
He invited neighbourhood heads and sub-district heads, officials of neighbourhood consultation bodies, religious leaders, and community figures to play an active role in presenting constructive positive activities.
Such activities include youth religious classes, intensive Islamic boarding school programmes, religious competitions, Qur’anic recitations, community service, and organised sports activities.
“If our young people are involved in religious classes, mosque activities, or social activities, they have space for positive expression. This will greatly help reduce the potential for brawling,” Munjirin said.
He asked parents to ensure their children are not involved in risky activities, such as sarong battles, playing with firecrackers, or illegal racing that often occur during Ramadhan nights.
“The role of parents is very important. Ensure children are in a safe environment and participate in beneficial activities. Do not be negligent,” Munjirin stressed.
Additionally, he requested district and village officials, together with TNI-Polri elements, to strengthen coordination and area supervision.
Supervision remains based on a preventative approach through guidance and positive activities as the primary step.
“Enforcement of regulations is important, but what is more important is prevention. Let us fill this Ramadhan with activities that build faith, strengthen brotherhood, and reinforce the character of the younger generation,” Munjirin said.
Through collaboration between the government, religious leaders, community figures, and families, he hopes that Ramadhan in East Jakarta can proceed safely, comfortably, and free from brawling incidents.
