East Jakarta Administration Uses Boxing Ring to Reduce Street Brawls

The East Jakarta City Government is employing a different approach to suppress the number of youth brawls by providing a boxing ring and skatepark as activity spaces for young people. This step is claimed to be showing results, as the number of brawls in East Jakarta has decreased since these facilities were constructed under the Pasar Rebo Flyover in Ciracas.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung stated that the presence of these sports facilities has successfully redirected the energy of youth groups that were previously frequently involved in brawls. “Since having this place, Alhamdulillah, the brawls have decreased drastically,” said Pramono during the inauguration of the boxing ring and skatepark on Monday (18/05/2026).

According to Munjirin, four groups of youths who were regular participants in brawls were invited to participate in a dialogue, which resulted in a mutual agreement. During the meeting, the youths requested boxing facilities because they previously had to travel to the Bulungan or Menteng areas in Central Jakarta to train. Following these discussions, the boxing ring was established for training purposes.

The boxing arena construction began on 12 January 2026 and was completed on 28 January 2026 through a collaboration of community self-help and CSR assistance. Throughout 2025, 132 cases of brawls were recorded in the area; however, as of May 2026, the number has reportedly dropped to 55 incidents.

He added that the sports facilities are now being utilised as a positive resource for residents, particularly young people. “This serves as a sports venue for citizens, supervised by professional boxing communities,” said Munjain. The boxing arena and skatepark are managed directly by professional communities and are open to the public free of charge.
