Earthquake shakes Manado, no panic

MANADO, North Sulawesi: An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale shook Manado city on Friday, meteorologists said. But no damage has been immediately reported.

Manado Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) head Subardjo said the quake took place at around 1:30 p.m., with the epicenter located 30 kilometers deep in the Maluku Sea, or 150 kilometers east of Manado.

Apart from Manado, the tremor was also felt in the towns of Tondano and Butung, he added.

However, most residents in Manado remained calm as the earthquake lasted for seconds only and quakes have occurred there many times before.

At the city's trading center, the quake came as a shock to residents but they later resumed their usual activities. --Antara
