Earthquake shakes Manado

MANADO, North Sulawesi: A strong earthquake rocked Manado on Saturday, but no casualties or major structural damage were reported.

The quake occurred at around 3:30 p.n. and lasted several minutes. Panicked residents ran out of buildings and poured into the streets, Antara reported.

Suhardjono from the provincial office of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said the quake measured 6.4 on the Richter scale.

It is believed the epicenter was in the waters off Siau island, a district in the Sangihe and Talaud island group, some 190 km northeast of here. (mds)
