Earthquake refugees in NTT join Independence Day competitions

A number of children affected by the earthquake took part in sack races to celebrate Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day at the Gelora Samador Maumere evacuation site in Sikka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, on Monday (17/8/2026). In addition to commemorating Indonesia’s independence, the competitions also served as entertainment for children traumatised by the earthquake that struck their homes on Saturday (15/8/2026) morning. The children also displayed drawings they had made during the Independence Day competitions at the evacuation site.
