Earthquake of Magnitude 4 Shakes North Sumatra
A magnitude 4.0 earthquake shook 104 kilometres southwest of South Nias, North Sumatra, on Friday, 13 March 2026. The earthquake occurred at 03:11 WIB with a depth of 28 kilometres.
The Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) announced the event via their official X account (@infoBMKG), noting that “Earthquake Magnitude 4.0, 13-Mar-2026 03:11:18 WIB, Location: 0.19°S, 97.27°E (104 km southwest of South Nias, North Sumatra), Depth: 28 km.”
The agency cautioned that the information prioritised speed of reporting, meaning data processing remained incomplete and subject to revision as more data became available.
No damage or casualties had been reported at the time of the initial announcement.
