Earthquake in North Sumatra felt as far as Malaysia's West Coast

Kuala Lumpur (ANTARA) - Tremors from a magnitude 6.4 earthquake that occurred in North Sumatra on Saturday at around 5.57 p.m. Western Indonesia Time were felt as far as the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The Malaysian Meteorological Department said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur that the earthquake did not pose a tsunami risk to Malaysia. The earthquake in North Sumatra occurred at a depth of 163 kilometres, 10 kilometres southeast of Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra Province. According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicentre was located at coordinates 2.91 degrees north latitude and 98.93 degrees east longitude. Tsunami modelling showed that the earthquake had no tsunami potential. Taking into account the location of the epicentre and the depth of the hypocentre, the earthquake was classified as an intermediate-depth earthquake resulting from plate subduction activity.
