Earth Hour Momentum: BRI Promotes Sustainability Through Concrete Actions in the Workplace
The recent Earth Hour event has once again highlighted the importance of collective action in preserving environmental sustainability. Even though the lights have been turned back on, efforts to save energy and reduce emissions must continue in everyday activities.
Since its initiation in 2007, Earth Hour has evolved into a global movement involving millions of participants in over 180 countries. The act of switching off lights for one hour serves as a symbol that simple steps taken together can have a real impact on the planet.
Participation in Earth Hour across various cities worldwide has been recorded to reduce electricity consumption by 10–15% in one hour. In Indonesia, the movement saves around 300 MW of electricity in one hour, equivalent to the needs of approximately 200,000 households or up to 700,000 people. This achievement demonstrates that collective action delivers significant impact.
In line with this spirit, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, or BRI, continues to integrate sustainability principles into work activities through concrete measures. This is manifested in energy management in the workplace, such as the use of energy-saving technology (including LED lights), optimisation of office facility operations like lift usage, and energy efficiency habits such as turning off and unplugging electronic devices when not in use.
These efforts are strengthened by the development of green building concepts, digitalisation of banking products and services, and supported by the utilisation of new renewable energy in the company’s operations.
BRI’s Director of Legal & Compliance, Mahdi Yusuf, stated that the company continues to strengthen sustainable practices consistently across all work lines.
“At BRI, sustainability is implemented as part of daily work activities. This step not only contributes to emission reductions but also shapes a work culture that is more aware of environmental impacts. Sustainability serves as a strategic foundation for the company in conducting business responsibly,” he said.
BRI is also developing initiatives through the implementation of the Green Network. By the end of 2025, the company will have utilised renewable energy through the installation of solar panels in 152 work units and operated 926 environmentally friendly vehicles. These initiatives contribute to a 9.6% reduction in operational emissions compared to the 2022 baseline year.
