Jakarta (ANTARA) - Today, 22 April 2026, the world commemorates Earth Day. KAI Group positions this commemoration as part of the company’s transformation direction in building an efficient, low-emission, and integrated transportation system through an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) approach.

From January to March 2026, KAI Group served 128,055,072 customers, an increase of 9.97% compared to the same period last year. This growth strengthens the role of railways as the backbone of mass mobility with better energy efficiency per passenger.

This efficiency is reflected in emission performance. During the 2026 Lebaran transportation period, for example, emissions from long-distance train journeys were recorded at approximately 8,928,821 kg CO₂e. In comparison for equivalent journeys, this figure is lower than private vehicles, thus supporting emission control in the transportation sector.

Strengthening low-emission operations is carried out through the utilisation of cleaner energy. Since February 2025, all KAI locomotives have used B40 Biosolar and are being prepared for the development of B50 biodiesel. KAI has also operated Solar Power Plants at 92 locations with a total capacity of 4,430.65 kWp to support operational energy needs.

The transformation is also directed towards developing electric-based systems. KAI is promoting the electrification of strategic lines such as Rangkasbitung–Merak, as well as the development of Cikarang–Cikampek and Bogor–Cigombong to increase capacity, trip frequency, and long-term energy efficiency.

This strengthening aligns with the development of KRL services as the backbone of urban mobility, with the potential to increase capacity from 1.1 million to 1.4 million passengers per day by 2030.

On the facility side, KAI is running a rejuvenation and modernisation programme for facilities. A total of 151 locomotive units and 328 train units are projected to be renewed to improve operational efficiency and service reliability.

KAI is also preparing for the adoption of technologies such as Battery Electric Multiple Units (BEMU), which enable operations with lower local emissions and support transportation decarbonisation.

This transformation is reinforced through customer experience. Through the Access by KAI application, customers can view estimates of the carbon footprint from the journeys they take.

From an operational perspective, service reliability remains maintained. Throughout the first quarter of 2026, KAI recorded an On-Time Performance for passenger train departures at 99.84% and arrivals at 97.61%. This punctuality provides journey certainty and supports public productivity.

KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication Anne Purba stated that the transformation being carried out by KAI is directed to meet future mobility needs.

“Trains reflect the progress of a nation’s civilisation. Through the transformation we are implementing, KAI continues to strengthen an efficient, low-emission transportation system capable of meeting society’s mobility needs,” said Anne.

“We are directing this development so that every journey provides broader benefits, both in terms of service, efficiency, and its impact on the environment,” added Anne.

The Earth Day commemoration reaffirms that mobility and sustainability go hand in hand.

“Through the ongoing transformation, KAI will continue to deliver efficient, reliable transportation services that contribute to civilisational progress in harmony with sustainability,” concluded Anne.
