Early Self-Protection Education Key to Preventing Child Sexual Abuse
Efforts to strengthen child protection from the threat of sexual abuse need to start from an early age through education that is easy to understand. Introducing concepts of body boundaries, types of safe and unsafe touch, and the courage to report to a trusted adult are important provisions for children in maintaining their personal safety.
This awareness is increasingly relevant considering that many primary school-aged children still do not understand the concept of self-protection and the steps to take when facing potentially dangerous situations. Therefore, collaboration between schools, families, and the community is an important factor in creating a safe and child-friendly environment.
Driven by this concern, a team of students from the Visual Communication Design Study Programme at Mercu Buana University held a Stop Child Abuse campaign at SDN Kebayoran Lama Utara 09, Jakarta. The activity, which was attended by 35 fourth-grade students, aimed to increase participants’ understanding of self-protection through an educational and interactive visual communication approach.
The team consisted of Shalsa Hasna Latifah, Raihan Erdiyansyah, Talita Shafhah Syahsiyah, Muhamad Fikriansyah, Muhammad Farrel J S., Ahmad Wasi Fathoni, and Mochamad Wisnu Inggra Diantoro. This programme is a form of community service and an effort to improve children’s literacy regarding the prevention of sexual abuse.
The activity began with an opening, followed by the delivery of material by Melani Aprianti, a Psychology lecturer at Mercu Buana University. In the session, students were introduced to the importance of maintaining body privacy, understanding the difference between safe touch and unsafe touch, and the importance of immediately reporting to parents, teachers, or trusted adults if they experience inappropriate actions. The material was delivered through interactive discussions, educational games, and question-and-answer sessions to make it easier for participants to understand.
Melani said that education about self-protection needs to be provided from an early age so that children have the knowledge and courage to maintain their own safety. “This activity aims to equip children with simple knowledge and skills so they are able to recognise body boundaries, understand the difference between safe and unsafe touch, dare to say no, and immediately seek help from a trusted adult when facing uncomfortable situations. Hopefully, through this activity, children will grow into individuals who are braver, wiser, and better able to take care of themselves, thus creating a safe, comfortable learning environment that supports every child’s growth and development,” said Melani.
She added that student enthusiasm during the activity was quite high. However, there were still participants who did not understand body boundaries and how to respond to situations that could potentially lead to sexual abuse. Therefore, similar education needs to be carried out continuously by involving schools and families.
The school appreciated the campaign. The Vice Principal of SDN Kebayoran Lama Utara 09 said that education on preventing sexual abuse and bullying is an important provision for primary school students. “Alhamdulillah, the socialisation activity on preventing sexual abuse and bullying went smoothly. The students’ enthusiasm was extraordinary. From this socialisation, we learned that every word and action has an impact. Hopefully, this will be a real step for SDN Kebayoran Lama Utara 09 Pagi towards becoming a Zero Bullying and Zero Sexual Abuse School. We extend our thanks to the speakers and the entire organising committee for their dedication and the knowledge provided,” he said.
From the activity evaluation, the students showed an increased understanding of the importance of protecting themselves, recognising risky situations, and the courage to report if they experience or witness inappropriate actions. With the Stop Child Abuse campaign, the organisers hope that education on preventing child sexual abuse can continue to be expanded in the school environment. “With the support of all parties, it is hoped that more children will have the knowledge and courage to protect themselves, thus creating a safe, comfortable learning environment that supports their growth and development,” concluded Melani.
