Early Moments of Clash on Jalan Tambak That Left One Dead
A clash involving two groups of residents in the Matraman area up to Jalan Tambak, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, 26 July 2026, has left a trail of grief and drawn serious attention from the police. The incident resulted in the death of a young man with the initials K (23), while another victim, DS, is still undergoing intensive care at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM). The event also drew public attention after video footage circulated on social media showing the early moments when the situation turned chaotic. In the video, two groups of residents are seen facing each other from opposite sides of a fence, throwing stones and shouting provocations. The tense atmosphere provided an early picture of how the conflict developed into a larger brawl. ‘The recording shows the early moments when the conflict heated up in the Matraman area, as a group of residents approached the Ambon people’s settlement,’ read a caption on the X account @sinheavnly, quoted on Monday, 27 July 2026. Despite various speculations circulating on social media, the Central Jakarta Metro Police confirmed that the cause of the clash was different from the viral narrative. Police stressed that the incident was not triggered by someone failing to pay for nasi uduk, but rather stemmed from noise caused by motorcyclists. Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief, Commissioner Dr. Reynold E.P. Hutagalung, explained that two people rode past on a motorcycle while revving the engine as they passed a nasi uduk vendor’s stall. The loud exhaust noise disturbed the activities of residents and traders still in the vicinity. ‘The two individuals on the motorcycle passed by the nasi uduk stall, and the stall was damaged, that was because they were revving the motorbike, causing noise from the exhaust,’ said Commissioner Reynold. The noise prompted a reprimand from local residents. However, instead of calming the situation, the warning provoked the two riders, who reportedly did not accept being told off. After leaving the location, they allegedly returned with around five other people. According to preliminary investigation results, the group is suspected of vandalising several stalls belonging to micro, small, and medium enterprises (UMKM) in the area. Several residents were also reportedly assaulted, making the situation increasingly difficult to control.
