E. Timorese rally against foreigners
DILI (AP): About 200 people rallied in front of UN
headquarters on Wednesday to protest the use of foreign workers
on reconstruction projects while most local laborers remain
jobless.
The first major protest against the world body's transitional
administration was mounted by a coalition of local socialist
groups.
It was sparked by the recent arrival of a group of Indonesian
workers who were employed to construct helicopter landing pads at
Dili airport.
The protesters demanded that jobs be given to East Timorese
and that the Indonesian workers leave the island.
