E. Timor needs arts council

DILI, East Timor: It's high time that East Timor establishes an arts council to preserve as well as develop the province's wealth of culture and heritage, a local official says.

"East Timor needs an arts council and the plan is feasible," said Soekarman, head of the province's education and culture office, the Antara news agency reported.

The proposal was first broached by a delegation from the Commission IX of the House of Representatives last week. Legislator Jatikusumo, who headed the delegation, said such a council could explore the wealth of culture and art of East Timor, help preserve it and develop it as well.

Soekarman added that the council could also act as a filter against the intrusion of unwanted side effects from foreign cultures. (emb)
