E. Java Police plan crack down on prostitution

SURABAYA, East Java: Provincial East Java Police Chief Insp.
Gen. Sutanto has instructed his subordinates to get tougher
against prostitutes, red-light districts and other night spots
during the fasting month, Antara reported Wednesday.

"The chief wants this province to become a territory free from
prostitution during Ramadhan, either on the streets, in the red-
light districts or any other location," spokesman of the East
Java province Adj. Sr. Comr. Sad Harunantyo said.

Harunantyo said the instruction was issued during a meeting to
discuss the five-day evaluation of the entertainment centers and
night spots which had already agreed to new regulations on their
operating hours during the fasting month.

Additionally, police also pledged to closely monitor the bars,
illegal motorcycle races, firecrackers and robbery of jewelry
shops.

All the police chiefs in East Java participated in the
meeting. --Antara
