Duties and Authority of Kompolnas that Prabowo Wants to Strengthen

The Commission for Accelerating Police Reform recommends strengthening the authority of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), which has been agreed upon by President Prabowo Subianto. “The President strongly agrees to the strengthening of Kompolnas. The Indonesian National Police Commission will be strengthened so that its decisions and recommendations are binding,” said the Chairman of the Police Reform Acceleration Committee, Jimly Asshidiqie, during a press conference at the Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday (5/5/2026). “The key point is the existence of Kompolnas with expanded authority, and its decisions are binding, so they must be implemented by the National Police Chief,” stated Yusril. “This was also conveyed earlier regarding the duties of the Minister of Law and Human Rights, Mr Supratman, and all of us to draft it, and it will then be submitted to the DPR as an amendment to the current Police Law, specifically several articles related to Kompolnas,” said Yusril. Kompolnas itself is a non-structural state institution that is positioned under and accountable to the President. The legal basis for the establishment of Kompolnas is Article 37 of Law Number 2 of 2002 on the Republic of Indonesia National Police (Polri). Kompolnas was formed through Presidential Regulation Number 17 of 2005 on Kompolnas, which was issued by the 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), on 7 February 2005. In carrying out its duties, Kompolnas has the function of functional oversight over the performance of Polri. This function aims to ensure that the professionalism and independence of the Polri institution are maintained. This oversight is implemented through monitoring and evaluation activities on the performance and integrity of Polri members and officials, in accordance with applicable statutory regulations.
