Dutchman gets 6 years for drugs

JAKARTA: The West Jakarta District Court sentenced on Thursday
a Dutch national identified as Laurens Hendrikus to six years in
jail for drug possession and trafficking and ordered him to pay a
Rp 75 million (US$7,500) fine or spend another three months in
jail.

Presiding judge M. Saleh said Hendrikus, 62, was found guilty
of carrying 14 grams of psychotropic drugs to Hotel Ibis in West
Jakarta last April.

The defendant confessed that he also had 997 grams of
psychotropic drugs and 891 grams of shabu shabu (crystal
methampethamine) in his residence on Jl. Margasatwa Raya,
Cilandak, South Jakarta.

He said the owner of the contraband was an acquaintance, Arif,
who is also a Dutch national. "I was only entrusted to keep and
sell it," he said.

Earlier, prosecutor R Sitanggang demanded that the defendant
be sentenced to eight years in jail and fined Rp 150 million.--
