Dutch tourist found dead

MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: A 52-year-old Dutch tourist, identified as J.C. Pols, was found dead last Wednesday in a tent at Pelawangan, Mt. Rinjani, Lombok Island, police said.

West Lombok Police spokesman Lt. Col. Djunaidy Tiansyah was quoted Thursday by Antara as saying the cause of Pols' death was still unknown. Police were waiting for the deceased's relatives consent to an autopsy.

"We made the request for permission through the Dutch consulate in Denpasar, Bali," Djunaidy said.

Pols' body is being held at Mataram Hospital morgue. Police suspect that judging by bruises found on the victim's head, Pols died in his sleep; from exhaustion, high blood pressure and the freezing temperature on Mt. Rinjani.

Pols had gone to Mt. Rinjani with three companions, but he was apparently not an experienced mountain climber. (swe)
