Dutch diver dies in Bali

DENPASAR, Bali: A Dutch tourist died on Monday while scuba diving the wreck of a U.S. warship off the eastern coast of Tulamben in Karangasem, Bali.

Onno Burgen, 41, on a week-long vacation on the resort island, had spent over three hours at a depth of 17 meters when a rescue team found his body amid the coral ridges at the helm of the USS Liberty, which sank near the Lombok strait in 1942.

Coral reefs, teeming with colorful marine life and vegetation around the skeletal ship, have attracted hundreds of foreign tourists, particularly divers, to Tulamben, one of Karangasem's major tourist destinations.

A Japanese tourist, Masaru Suda, 23, also drowned in Gili Tepekong, Candidasa, not far from the accident site at the beginning of 2000. --Antara
