Dutch church officials in Malang
MALANG, East Java: Dutch church officials believe that the recent unrest in various cities throughout Indonesia was not religiously motivated, a local Moslem leader said.
"They are really supportive of efforts to prevent further rioting in Indonesia," Head of the East Java chapter of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Moslem Organization Hasyim Muzadi said as quoted by Antara yesterday.
Speaking to reporters after receiving the Dutch delegation, Muzadi said NU would not investigate the riots but would recommend ways to prevent them from reoccurring.
He said that the rioting was triggered by complex reasons, including extremism, rivalries between interest groups and socio- economic problems. (imn)
