Dukuh Atas Pedestrian Deck Enters Tender Phase, Construction to Begin When?
PT MRT Jakarta has begun pushing forward with the construction of a pedestrian deck, or circular connecting bridge, in the Dukuh Atas area. The project has now entered the tender stage, with the contractor targeted to start work in November 2026.
Agus Trihan, Advisor of the Programme Management Office Division at MRT Jakarta, said that technically the construction of the bridge is entirely feasible, although it carries a high level of difficulty as it sits in the middle of an area with active traffic.
“If you ask whether it can definitely go ahead, it can. Because we have now started the tender, with the hope that the contractor can come on board in November,” Agus said at the Transport Hub in Jakarta on Thursday (30/7/2026).
MRT Jakarta has conducted market sounding with a number of steel construction companies and civil contractors. From those discussions, industry players assessed that the project can be carried out because the necessary construction technology is already available.
“Technically it is very feasible, it is just challenging. But those challenges can be answered either with time or with money. So later on, the cost will do the talking there,” he said.
One of the main challenges is building the steel structure over an area that remains in operation, without disrupting traffic activity or public transport. For that reason, special construction methods will be used during the building process.
Behind its unique design, the circular shape of the pedestrian deck is not merely an aesthetic consideration. Agus revealed that the design was chosen to preserve the continuity of Jakarta’s urban planning concept, which was laid out as far back as the era of Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno.
Areas along Jakarta’s main axis — from the Patung Pemuda Senayan, Simpang Semanggi, Bundaran HI, to the Horse Statue — all carry circular elements as points of urban orientation. The circular shape has also received approval from the Jakarta Provincial Government as part of the project’s final concept.
“Indeed, when Bung Karno designed it back then, this axis was created using circular symbols as city centres. That is why we also made this deck round, as a tribute to the design made by the founder of our nation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sagita Devi, Head of the TOD Planning Department at MRT Jakarta, said the currently selected pedestrian deck design is the result of a series of studies and refinements. The project was initially designed with two floors and a rooftop area, but the design changed after considering field conditions, asset ownership, and the permitting process.
“That is also part of the mitigation and planning process that we had already anticipated, so that this project can be realised on the ground,” said Sagita.
