Dukcapil Reveals Sutrisno and Sulastri as Most Common Names in Java

The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs has revealed the most commonly used names in Indonesia. On the island of Java, Sutrisno and Sulastri are the most popular names, prevalent across all age groups. “These are distinctive names; in Java, it’s Sutrisno and Sulastri,” said Teguh Setyabudi, Director General of Dukcapil, during a national coordination meeting and the release of first-semester 2026 population data in Jakarta, as quoted on Tuesday (4/8). Teguh noted that there are 102,519 males named Sutrisno in Java, while 135,421 females are named Sulastri. The pattern differs in Sumatra, where the most common names are Junaidi for men and Nurhayati for women. Dukcapil recorded approximately 45,219 individuals named Junaidi and 83,421 named Nurhayati on the island. “It is similar in Sumatra because there are many transmigrants there, many Javanese people,” he explained. The names Junaidi and Nurhayati are not only popular in Sumatra but also in Kalimantan, where they are the most common names on the island of Borneo. There are 12,940 men named Junaidi and 14,342 women named Nurhayati in Kalimantan. The name Nurhayati is also popular on other islands, including Sulawesi, Maluku, Nusa Tenggara, and Papua. In Sulawesi, there are 23,760 women named Nurhayati. However, unlike in Kalimantan, the name Junaidi is less popular than Sudirman, which is the most common male name in Sulawesi. “In Maluku, it’s Rahman and Nurhayati, especially in North Maluku,” he stated. In Nusa Tenggara, the most common names are Ahmad for men and Nurhayati for women. In Papua, Ismail is the most common male name, while Nurhayati is the most common female name. Meanwhile, in Bali, the most common male name is I Wayan Sudiarta and the most common female name is Ni Nyoman Sari.
