Have you ever felt your name is too common or frequently encountered people with the same name? You are not alone. The Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil) under the Ministry of Internal Affairs has just released surprising data regarding the list of the most common names in Indonesia in 2026.

Based on Clean Population Data (DKB) for the second semester of 2025 presented in March 2026, it was revealed that legendary names such as Nurhayati, Sutrisno, and Sulastri continue to dominate populations across various major islands in the country.

On the Island of Sumatra, the name Junaidi was officially crowned as the most widely used male name with a total of 45,217 people. Meanwhile, for women, the name Nurhayati leads by a significant margin with a count reaching 84,350 bearers.

“The most common names based on islands include, for instance, in Sumatra, Junaidi for males and Nurhayati for females,” said Dukcapil Director General Teguh Setyabudi at Hotel Bidakara, South Jakarta, Thursday (12/3).

Turning to the Island of Java, which has the densest population, the number of name “duplicates” increased drastically. The name Sutrisno was recorded as being used by 103,903 men. However, the highest record is held by the name Sulastri, which touched a remarkable figure of 137,708 people.

In the Sulawesi region, the name Sudirman became the most popular for males with a population of 19,356 people. Whilst for women, the name Nurhayati appeared again as the most common with a total of 23,879 people, proving that this name has very wide distribution across Indonesia.
