Dukcapil Director General Clarifies Rumours of Ban on Photocopying and Using Electronic ID for Hotel Check-Ins

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – In recent times, there has been considerable media coverage regarding the Electronic Identity Card (KTP-el) no longer needing to be shown for hotel check-ins, along with perceptions of a ban on photocopying the KTP-el. In response to this, the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Ditjen Dukcapil) of the Ministry of Home Affairs has clarified the circulating information.

The KTP-el is the official population identity card used for various service and administrative purposes, both public services and other needs requiring personal identification. Ditjen Dukcapil of the Ministry of Home Affairs continues to collaborate with various parties to innovate and strengthen personal data security systems.

The aim is to ensure that the use of population data and documents occurs in a safer, more orderly, and protected manner. Dirjen Dukcapil Teguh Setyabudi explained that his office has collaborated on the utilisation of population data with approximately 7,500 user institutions, both government agencies and Indonesian legal entities.

This is done through various data access and verification methods, such as card readers, web services, web portals, facial recognition (FR), and Digital Population Identity (IKD). “Ditjen Dukcapil of the Ministry of Home Affairs encourages the utilisation of electronic or digital verification and validation of population data,” said Teguh in Jakarta on Tuesday (12/5/2026).

According to him, the public can still use the KTP-el for various needs requiring official verification or population identity. This includes hotel check-ins and other purposes in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
