Due to Apple's Promises, iPhone Users to Receive Compensation of Up to Rp 1.6 Million
iPhone users in the United States are set to receive compensation from Apple amounting to up to Rp 1.6 million. This compensation stems from a class-action lawsuit won by a group of iPhone users against Apple regarding promises of new features on their phones. However, those features had been announced at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2024. The lawsuit claimed that Apple “promoted AI capabilities that did not exist at the time, do not exist now, and will not exist for two years or more.” The lawsuit also stated that Apple “flooded the internet, television, and various other media to build clear and reasonable expectations that these features would be available when the iPhone was released.” The users ultimately won the lawsuit, and Apple is prepared to pay the compensation. The company, headquartered in Cupertino, US, will pay a total compensation of $250 million (approximately Rp 4.3 trillion). From this total, the amount to be paid for each device is estimated at $25 to $95 (approximately Rp 433,000 to Rp 1.6 million). Although agreeing to the settlement payment, Apple does not admit any wrongdoing. Apple stated that they “acted in good faith and in a manner believed to comply with all applicable rules, regulations, and laws.” “These features include Visual Intelligence, Live Translation, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Clean Up, and many more,” it added, as quoted by KompasTekno from 9to5Mac. This compensation will be given to users who purchased devices supporting Apple Intelligence in the United States between 10 June 2024 and 29 March 2025. The compensation amount is $25 for each eligible device. However, this amount may vary depending on the number of valid claims submitted by users. If the claim submission percentage is very high, the payment value could be lower. Meanwhile, the maximum payment limit is $95 per device. The $250 million figure in this settlement also includes attorney fees, administration, and other costs. Thus, the actual amount distributed to users will be smaller. This settlement has received preliminary approval today, and claim submission notices will be sent within 45 days. It should be noted that this compensation is only for users in the US, where the lawsuit was filed.
