Dudung: Prison Rehabilitation Programmes Provide Inmates with Skills for a Better Life

Cilacap Regency, Central Java (ANTARA) - Head of the Presidential Staff Office Dudung Abdurachman said rehabilitation programmes in correctional institutions offer hope for inmates to lead better lives after their release.

“It is hoped this situation will serve as a provision for them, so that after leaving here they have hope, can behave well, and can achieve a better life,” Dudung said during a visit to the Garment Training Centre (BLK) on Nusakambangan island, Cilacap Regency, Central Java, on Tuesday.

He also commended the various rehabilitation programmes initiated by the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Services (Imipas), including the garment programme in which inmates are taught to sew and make clothing.

Through the programme, he expressed hope that inmates would remain productive when they return to society.

During the visit, Dudung interacted with an inmate named Siswododo (28) from Brebes, Central Java, who was sewing at the time.

Dudung asked Siswododo whether he had a family and what case had led to his conviction.

“Yes, sir, I have two children,” Siswododo replied.

Siswododo said he had been convicted in a drug case and sentenced to two years and three months in prison.

“I have only been working (sewing) here for two months,” he said.

Dudung advised Siswododo to remain patient and behave well while in prison. He also urged him not to repeat his offence.

“God willing, something better awaits you. Do not do it again,” Dudung said.
