Dudung Appreciates Productive Rehabilitation Programme for Nusakambangan Inmates
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the Presidential Staff Office Dudung Abdurachman has praised the self-reliance rehabilitation programme for inmates at Nusakambangan Prison, saying it equips them with work skills and the hope of becoming productive again after their release.
In an official statement quoted in Jakarta on Wednesday, Dudung said the programme gives inmates the opportunity to acquire skills whilst preparing for life after serving their sentences.
“This is extraordinary development work. Inmates, in addition to serving their sentences, feel this situation gives them the wherewithal so that after they are released they have the hope of doing good and earning an income for their families,” he said.
During an inspection of the garment vocational training centre at Nusakambangan Prison on Tuesday (28/7), Dudung saw first-hand the clothing production process carried out by the inmates.
He also spoke with a number of inmates, including Siswantoro, who said he had acquired sewing skills, incentives from production output, and remission whilst undergoing rehabilitation.
Besides observing the garment training, Dudung sampled ice cream made from cassava grown by the inmates, and judged the product’s quality to be competitive with commercial brands.
According to Dudung, these various productive activities demonstrate that rehabilitation in correctional institutions is oriented not merely towards carrying out sentences, but also towards preparing inmates with economic resources before they return to society.
For these achievements, Dudung expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Institutions for managing rehabilitation with a focus on self-reliance.
The Head of the Presidential Staff Office also stated that he would continue to champion the government’s priority programmes through coordinated support across ministries and agencies.
