Dry Season Predicted to Last Until October, Jakarta Provincial Government to Conduct Cloud Seeding Twice a Week

The Jakarta Provincial Government plans to conduct weather modification operations (OMC) at least twice a week to anticipate drought during the dry season, which is predicted to last until October.

Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung stated that a meeting had been held with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to anticipate the impacts of the dry season. The meeting revealed that the current dry season, accompanied by the El Niño phenomenon, is expected to persist for another two months.

“Based on the existing data, the peak of El Niño will be long, possibly one of the longest compared to 2023. The peak will be around the end of September or the first or second week of October before it rains,” he said at the DKI Jakarta City Hall on Wednesday (5/8/2026).

Pramono stated that his party has prepared a plan to conduct OMC to create rain in the capital region. However, the operation can only be carried out if there are sufficient clouds in the sky. He noted that the current problem is the scarcity of clouds, making it impossible to perform the operation without them.

“The point is, I have given approval for artificial rain or weather modification to be made once or twice a week if there are clouds, because this will last a long time,” he said.

Pramono also reminded the public to be vigilant against the potential for fires, as such incidents are highly likely during the dry season. Consequently, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will launch a campaign to anticipate fire incidents, including ensuring the availability of clean water. He also requested that officials at the neighbourhood and community unit levels prepare light fire extinguishers (APAR).

“Because sooner or later, with the dry conditions, there is also the possibility of ISPA,” he said.
