Drunk man's car thief in Tambora faces seven years in prison
Jakarta (ANTARA) - A man identified by the initials AA (33) faces up to seven years in prison after stealing a car and valuables from an intoxicated man in Tambora, West Jakarta.
“Article 477 of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning aggravated theft carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ imprisonment,” said Tambora Police Chief AKP Wahyu Hidayat when contacted in Jakarta on Monday.
Wahyu explained that the perpetrator stole a car and valuables belonging to a victim identified as AG, who was unconscious after becoming heavily intoxicated from drinking jamu intisari, a herbal tonic. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 10 February.
“The victim came to drink jamu intisari. However, several minutes after consuming the drink, he lost consciousness,” he said.
Wahyu stated that the victim began drinking the herbal tonic on Tuesday evening, 10 February, from approximately 8pm to 10pm local time.
The large quantity of alcohol consumed eventually left the victim severely inebriated and collapsed outside his car in front of Aestro Gym on Jalan Bandengan Utara, Tambora.
Whilst the victim was unconscious, AA happened to pass by and saw an opportunity to steal the victim’s valuables.
The victim only regained consciousness the following day, Wednesday 11 February, at approximately 6.15am, and panicked upon discovering that his car had vanished along with his small bag.
“Inside the bag that the suspect took were Rp300,000 in cash, an identity card, and the vehicle registration certificate,” Wahyu revealed.
The victim subsequently reported the incident to Tambora Police in West Jakarta on Tuesday, 17 February.
Armed with the report and CCTV footage from around the crime scene, the Criminal Investigation Unit of Tambora Police immediately pursued the perpetrator.
One day later, police successfully apprehended the suspect at a rented dwelling in the Kapuk area of Cengkareng, West Jakarta.
“The car was still in the perpetrator’s possession, but he was planning to conduct a cash-on-delivery sale. The car had been advertised on Facebook, but because we received intelligence, the Tambora Criminal Investigation Unit moved swiftly to make the arrest,” he said.
Wahyu noted that the suspect AA was a first-time offender who had been tempted by the opportunity presented before him.
The perpetrator admitted to committing the theft because he needed money ahead of Eid al-Fitr 1447 H.
“The perpetrator is unemployed. The money was to be used for personal needs — he intended to sell the car for profit and use the proceeds for Lebaran expenses,” Wahyu added.
