Drugged driver crashes into U.S. Embassy

JAKARTA (JP): A green Honda Accord sedan crashed into the front gates of the American Embassy on Jl. Medan Merdeka in Central Jakarta at about 3 a.m. on Sunday, an officer said.

According to First Sergeant Sinaga of the Central Jakarta Police intelligence unit, the driver, identified only as Habib, was believed to have been under the influence of amphetamines when the accident took place.

"When he was brought to the Central Jakarta Police station, he was very paranoid. A police doctor tested him and found out that he was high on amphetamines," Sinaga told The Jakarta Post.

Sinaga added that the gates were badly damaged, but the driver was not hurt.

"The driver is originally from Bandung, West Java. He has been transferred to the Kramat Jati Police hospital for further drug tests.

"Members of his family said that he had just got out from a drug rehabilitation center," the officer explained. (ylt)
