Drug smugglers arrested

PADANGRATU, Central Lampung: Police have arrested two suspected drug smugglers from Medan, North Sumatra, who tried to smuggle almost 90 kilograms of marijuana to Jakarta.

Head of the southern Sumatra Police Command, Maj. Gen. M. Arif Tawil, said on Saturday the two smugglers, identified as DK and MH, were arrested on Friday.

"The drugs were seized and the police will further investigate the men's possible involvement in other heroin smuggling cases," he said.

Arif added that the police would intensify crackdowns on heroin smugglers and users in the region.

"If found guilty, they will get hefty punishments," he said as quoted by the Antara news agency.

He said that Lampung and South Sumatra were vulnerable to heroin trafficking. (rms)
