Drug possession leads to five-year sentence

YOGYAKARTA: The Yogyakarta District Court sentenced a 32-year man to five years in prison and fined him Rp 100 million on Monday, after declaring him guilty of illegally possessing three packs of marijuana.

The sentence for Udirman Simarmata, a resident from Umbulharjo subdistrict, was more lenient that what was demanded by prosecutor Nur Kumalaningdyah, who had sought 10 years in jail.

Udirman said during the trial that he could accept the verdict; the prosecutor, on the other hand, said he would consider appealing it.

The suspect was arrested on Oct. 15 at his home by local police, who discovered three small packs of marijuana leaves, twigs and seeds in his possession. --Antara
