Drug delivery foiled at airport

TANGERANG: Customs and excise officers at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport managed to foil the delivery of 43 kilograms of marijuana from Banda Aceh into the city through a cargo service company, an official announced on Monday.

Customs and excise chief Jusuf Indarto said that three people identified as Irwandi Ibrahim, Yono, and Riamis Riafil, the intended recipients of the illicit drugs, were arrested on Tuesday and Friday.

Jusuf said the drugs had been wrapped neatly in three packets and addressed to the three people.

While the packets were being examined by an X-ray machine, the officers became suspicious and later found that they contained drugs.

Custom officials, along with the police, then headed to the addresses to arrest the suspects.

One of the three suspects was shot in the leg as he tried to escape.

According to Jusuf, the suspects had violated Article 53 of Law No. 10/1995 on Custom and Excise, and Article 78 of Law No. 22/1997 on Drugs. If found guilty, they could face a maximum punishment of 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of Rp 500 million. --JP
