Driving Licences Expiring on Ascension Day Holiday Granted Extension
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Owners of driving licences (SIM) whose validity expires during the national holiday for the Ascension of Jesus Christ on 14 May 2026 need not worry. A special dispensation applies to SIM holders whose licences expire precisely on that red-letter day. Through an announcement on the official Instagram account @satpasmetrojaya, SIM services at Satpas Daan Mogot, the DKI Jakarta Traffic Police Unit, DKI Jakarta SIM kios, and mobile SIM units will be closed on Thursday (14/5/2026) as it coincides with the national holiday for the Ascension of Jesus Christ. SIM issuance services will reopen on Friday, 15 May 2026. The good news is that holders of SIMs expiring exactly on 14 May 2026 can still renew them without having to apply for a new SIM. “Holders of SIMs whose validity expires on 14 May 2026 may carry out renewals from 15 to 18 May 2026 using the renewal mechanism,” states the post. This policy is an exception to the standard SIM renewal rules. Generally, SIMs must be renewed before their expiry date. Head of Technical Section, Subdirectorate of SIM, Directorate of Traffic Regulation, National Police Traffic Corps, AKBP Faisal Andri Pratomo, stated that SIM holders whose licences expire on a national holiday indeed receive dispensation for renewal. According to Faisal, this rule is contained in the Korlantas Police Telegram Letter Number: ST/269/II/YAN.1.1./2022. This means that SIM holders whose licences expire on 14 May 2026 can still renew them, provided it is done within the specified dispensation period. Therefore, the public is urged to take advantage of the renewal dispensation period from 15 to 18 May 2026 to avoid having to apply for a new SIM.
