Semarang, Kompas.com - driving licence is a mandatory document for all motor vehicle operators and must be renewed every five years.

Renewal is based on the validity period stated on the driving licence, no longer tied to the vehicle owner’s date of birth, but calculated from the issue date.

AKBP Prianggo Malau, Sub-Director of Registration and Identification at the Central Java Police Traffic Department, stated that the validity period is governed by official regulations.

‘Regarding validity, as per Police regulation No. 5 of 2021, Article 4 paragraph 1, individual and general motor vehicle driving licences are valid for five years from the issue date and can be renewed before expiry,’ Prianggo told Kompas.com on Sunday (24 May 2026).

Motorists are advised not to delay renewal beyond the validity period, as expired driving licences require a full reapplication process including theoretical and practical tests.

Currently, driving licence renewal can be done at SIM service points, mobile units, or via the Digital Korlantis Polri app, provided all administrative requirements are met.

Meanwhile, renewal fees vary according to licence category, as regulated in Government regulation No. 76 of 2020 on types and rates of non tax state revenue (PNBP).

These fees exclude health checks, psychological assessments, or insurance as required at local SIM service points.
