Hafiz Mahendra (25), the driver of the black Toyota Calya who drove against traffic and was pursued by residents on Gunung Sahari, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday (25/2/2026).

Hafiz admitted that he didn’t want to stop because he panicked when being chased by the crowd. Moreover, his car was already driving in the wrong direction, so he continued to drive fast.

“Because I was driving in the wrong direction, I couldn’t stop. I panicked when being chased by residents,” said Hafiz, as quoted by Kompas TV, Thursday (26/2/2026).

“Because I don’t have a driver’s license and didn’t bring the vehicle registration, I was afraid of the police. I was afraid of getting a fine,” said Hafiz.

He also admitted that he had just arrived in the capital city and was heading to Ancol, North Jakarta. Previously, he and his girlfriend had been to Karawang.

“I don’t know the way. I came from Surabaya, then Karawang, and now I’m going to Ancol with my girlfriend,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Traffic at the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, Kombes Komarudin, said that the woman who was with Hafiz in the car was the perpetrator’s girlfriend.

“(The female passenger) is still being investigated. According to her statement, she is the perpetrator’s girlfriend,” said Komarudin in a video shared by the Traffic Unit of the Jakarta Central Police.

The police found several pieces of evidence in the car. Hafiz was found carrying two sharp weapons, namely a machete and a dagger, as well as a toy gun.

In addition, there were four different vehicle license plates in the car.

“It was found that there were four vehicle license plates,” said Komarudin.

For his actions, HM was charged with Article 311 paragraph (1), (2), and (3) of Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Road Traffic and Transportation (UU LLAJ).
