Driver Mobbed After Striking Independence Day Walking Parade Participants in Sidrap

A motorist with the initials K (57) was mobbed and his vehicle damaged in Sidrap Regency, South Sulawesi, after he struck a motorcyclist and participants of a walking parade during the 81st Indonesian Independence Day commemoration.

“The traffic accident involved one Futura-type car, one motorcycle, and several pedestrians,” said Sidrap Police Chief AKBP Indra Waspada, as reported by detikSulsel on Tuesday (18/8/2026).

The accident occurred on Jalan Poros Pangkajene-Rappang, Kadidi Urban Village, Panca Rijang District, on Monday (17/8) at around 3.15 pm local time. The incident prompted residents at the scene to vent their emotions against the driver.

“Because he struck several walking parade participants and there was an outpouring of emotion from the surrounding community, vigilante action occurred,” he said.

Indra explained that the car driver initially hit a motorcycle parked at the location. The car was travelling from south to north.

“He struck a motorcycle that was parked on the roadside in the same direction,” Indra said.

The car continued moving until it hit a group of walking parade participants commemorating Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day. It was at that point that the driver was mobbed.

“The Futura driver continued his journey and struck one of the groups of pedestrians who were carrying out 17 August activities,” Indra explained.

Indra has not yet detailed the number of casualties in the traffic accident. He said the motorcyclist and walking parade participants were immediately taken to hospital.

Meanwhile, the car driver is also still receiving treatment after being mobbed. Indra stressed that the case remains under investigation after the vehicles involved in the accident were secured.
