Driver killed in scuffle

JAKARTA (JP): An Angkot (public transportation minibus) driver, Alpian Harahap, was beaten to death by about 15 ojek (motorcycle taxi) drivers in Cipendawa district, Bekasi, West Java, over the weekend.

Alpian, 27, and his brother and assistant, Martua Harahap, were mobbed by the ojek drivers after Alpian's vehicle had hit one of the motorcycles.

Martua managed to elude the angry assailants, but Alpian was caught while trying to run away.

Alpian was beaten and thrown by the mob into a small river. He died instantly.

According to Alpian's relative, Mustapa Kamal, Martua had offered the ojek driver whose motorcycle was hit by Alpian's car Rp 140,000 (US$60.86) in compensation for the damage to the motorcycle. But his offer was flatly rejected.

Alpian was a resident of Gunung Putri village, Bogor, West Java. He is survived by a wife and his six-month old son.(04)
