Driver jailed for 4 years

PALANGKA RAYA, Central Kalimantan: A driver whose negligence
caused the death of nine passengers in the Central Kalimantan
capital of Palangka was sentenced in the Palangka Raya District
Court on Monday to four-years jail.

The sentence imposed on Nur Ilhami, 18, was heavier than that
demanded by the prosecution who sought a three-year jail term.

Judges Yufery said Nur was found guilty of negligence causing
the deaths of nine of his 13 passengers, including for children,
and injuries to the remainder.

The crash took place on July 28, 2001, at 01:00 p.m. on Jalan
Cilik Riwut, 36 kilometers from Palangka Raya.

Nur told the court he could accept the verdict and would not
appeal against it. --Antara
