Jakarta — The Lebaran homecoming season is characterised by increased public mobility on roads, creating significantly higher traffic accident risks compared to normal days. This was evident in a recent incident on the Pemalang-Batang toll road where a bus collided with several vehicles.

Jusri Pulubuhu, founder of Jakarta Defensive Driving Consulting (JDDC), stated that roads under normal conditions are already classified as hazardous environments for road users. “During the homecoming season, vehicle volume increases. Driver fitness declines, driver emotional stability is compromised, and drivers become prone to impulsive behaviour,” Jusri told Kompas.com on Monday (16 March 2026).

Therefore, it is crucial for all road users to understand the various potential hazards that may occur. “Drivers should map out and understand that when they drive during this homecoming season, they must be aware of potential dangers,” said Jusri.

Several potential risks require vigilance, including sideswiping, rear-end collisions, drowsiness whilst driving, loss of vehicle control, and fatigue during travel. By understanding these potential threats, drivers are expected to remain more cautious during their homecoming journeys.

When drivers become vigilant, they can practise more careful driving. This includes frequently checking mirrors to monitor the behaviour of vehicles behind them. Accidents often occur not only due to one’s own negligence but can result from the negligence of other road users.
