Dredging of West Flood Canal Targeted for Completion Within One Year
Jakarta (ANTARA) - DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo targets the dredging of the West Flood Canal on the segment from Pintu Air Manggarai to Jalan Kyai Tapa (Roxy) in the Tanah Abang area, Central Jakarta, to be completed within one year. According to him, the dredging is carried out as a strategic step to reduce flood risks in Jakarta. “We are today at a very strategic location to address one of Jakarta’s flood problems. This is where the Ciliwung River and Krukut River meet, which has not been dredged for quite some time. We will focus for one year on the dredging of this West Flood Canal, which is the downstream of the Ciliwung River and Krukut River,” said Pramono in Central Jakarta on Friday. The West Flood Canal has a varying width between 30 and 100 metres, with a total planned dredging volume of 179,269 cubic metres. The dredging work is divided into three segments, namely from Pintu Air Manggarai to Karet Station spanning 3,543 metres, from Karet Station to Pintu Air Karet spanning 686 metres, and from Pintu Air Karet to Jalan Kyai Tapa (Roxy) spanning 3,850 metres. Currently, the dredging is focused on the third segment spanning 3,850 metres, with a target volume of around 165,381 cubic metres. Pramono stated that the project is a priority and must not experience delays. He has also assigned the Central Jakarta Mayor and the DKI Jakarta Water Resources Agency to ensure the dredging proceeds according to target. “This project must not fail and must not be delayed. This is a priority for the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government,” Pramono emphasised. The dredging is also expected to increase water holding capacity, smooth the flow, and address shallowing due to sediment and waste deposits. Pramono revealed that this effort is part of disaster mitigation to suppress flood and inundation risks, especially in the Setiabudi, Tanah Abang, Menteng, Gambir, Palmerah, and Grogol Petamburan areas. “With consistent dredging and normalisation, we hope the potential for inundation in those areas can be significantly reduced,” Pramono stated.
