The administration of Jakarta has done the right thing by
prohibiting the construction of anything on the flood plains
along the rivers in Jakarta as otherwise the rivers will silt up
and flood during the wet season. Flood plains must be free from
any buildings.

Unfortunately, many big and small rivers in Jakarta are in a
poor state. These rivers are dirty and silted up because of the
garbage that the residents thoughtlessly dump into them.
Obviously, when it rains heavily, these rivers will overflow.

Aside from prohibiting the construction of anything on flood
plains, the administration must ensure that the rivers and canals
in Jakarta are properly dredged and cleaned so that they can
accommodate rainwater.
