Drainage Channels in Senggigi Normalised After Flooding
Drainage channels in the Senggigi area, Batu Layar Subdistrict, West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), have begun to be normalised. Sedimentation removal is being carried out after the tourism area was hit by flooding on Sunday (5/4). “We have already carried out dredging, in collaboration with the River Basin Organisation (BBWS) and the Road Authority because it is a national road,” said the Head of the Public Works, Spatial Planning, Housing, and Settlement Area Department (PUPRPKP) of West Lombok, Lalu Ratnawi, on Wednesday (8/4/2026). Ratnawi stated that sedimentation dredging was carried out manually on the drainage channels in front of several hotels. Starting from Sheraton Senggigi Beach Resort, Merumata, Sudamala, and Qunci Villas. According to him, the sedimentation buildup has reached an acute level. In fact, the sedimentation covers half of the drainage channel which has a depth of about 50 centimetres (cm) and a width of 60 cm. “Half of it is covered by sedimentation, so it cannot accommodate the capacity of rainwater,” Ratnawi explained. Ratnawi said that the sedimentation buildup in the drainage channels has occurred for a long time. As a result, roads in Senggigi are often flooded. “The drainage channels are narrow and the sedimentation is never addressed. As soon as water comes from the hills, it immediately enters the hotel area,” he clarified. Ratnawi confirmed that rubbish blockages in the drainage channels are one of the causes of flooding in the area. He urged hotel managers to also clean the drainage channels regularly. “We urge them to carry out independent cleaning regularly. We all have responsibilities, not just one side or the other,” said Ratnawi. “We have been instructed by the Regent to create a comprehensive master plan, so that the area is free from flooding,” he concluded.
