Dr Tifa's Legal Team Outraged Over Incomplete Case Files

The inaugural trial of doctor Tifauzia Tyassuma, known as dr Tifa, at the East Jakarta District Court on Thursday, 2 July 2026, was marked by strong protests from her legal team. The defence accused the Public Prosecutor of failing to provide the complete case dossier, which they argue has hampered the preparation of their defence.

Dr Tifa’s legal counsel, Abdullah Alkatiri, expressed his frustration after the hearing. He stated that the case documents received by the legal team were far from complete, despite these files being a crucial basis for studying the indictment.

“How can we view this case comprehensively? Therefore, there is a big question mark: what is happening here, why are the documents not being given to us fairly?” Abdullah Alkatiri told reporters after the trial on Thursday, 2 July 2026.

Abdullah revealed that the legal team had approached the prosecutor to request copies of the case files. However, he said the documents provided were only a small portion of the entire dossier. He claimed the actual volume of the case files reached about 1.5 metres, but his team only received about a quarter of the total documents.

“We instructed our team to request the case files from the Public Prosecutor, but they were not given in full. Only a quarter was provided. Yet, as we understand it, the original files are one and a half metres high!” he stated.

According to Abdullah, this situation has made it difficult for the legal team to study the case thoroughly before preparing their defence strategy for the trial. The defence team believes that the incomplete handover of documents potentially undermines the defendant’s right to obtain an optimal defence. Abdullah stated that, according to legal provisions, the prosecutor is obliged to hand over a complete copy of the investigation report along with the case transfer files to the defendant or their legal counsel. He therefore questioned the reasons for not providing all the documents needed to study the case comprehensively, and expressed an objection to the situation, noting that the missing documents complicated the team’s efforts to formulate a defence strategy.
