JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The X Commission of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) plans to summon the Ministry of Education, Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemendiktisaintek) to discuss the rising cases of violence in educational settings, following the beating of a student at Dipogonero University? (Undip), Semarang.

Deputy Chairman of the X Commission DPR RI, Lalu Hadrian Irfani, said the meeting is planned to take place after Lebaran 2026. During the gathering, the DPR will evaluate rules related to the prevention of violence within educational environments. He said the cases illustrate that the current regulations may need review if they have not effectively curbed various forms of violence, including physical, verbal, and sexual violence.

“This is a joint PR; not only the campus authorities, Kemendiktisaintek must review it. There is already Permendikbudristek relating to the prevention of violence, both physical and verbal, as well as sexual violence. If Permendikbudristek proves unable to reduce the incidence of violence, then let us review it together,” he said.

He also opened the possibility of strengthening violence prevention measures in educational settings via law. “Is the Permendikbudristek still weak, or should we embed this in a law? This is the critical topic for discussion going forward, because it’s a case of one death feeding a thousand more alike, as the saying goes,” he added.

Earlier reports described the assault on Arnendo (19), a 2024 cohort student at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences (FIB) at Diponegoro University, by dozens of peers from the same department, drawing public attention. Kasatreskrim of Semarang Metro Police Andika Dharma Sena said the victim was initially summoned to a boarding house in the Tembalang area before being interrogated by several students.

“The victim was contacted by one of his colleagues to come to a boarding house in the Tembalang area. Upon arrival, he was interrogated about alleged sexual violence against one of his female fellow students,” Andika said on Thursday (5/3/2026). He noted the victim initially denied the accusations before being beaten by dozens of students into the early hours.

Meanwhile, Undip stated it has formed two separate teams: an ethics team to investigate the assault and a Sexual Violence Task Force to investigate the accusation of harassment by Arnendo. “Universitas Diponegoro regrets the occurrence of violence in any form. At the same time, the university asserts that all violence, including sexual violence, is unacceptable,” said Nurul Hasfi, Director of the Undip Media Network Directorate.
