DPR Urges Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to Intervene in Thousands of Failed Umrah Cases

DPR Commission VIII member Hidayat Nur Wahid has highlighted allegations of fraud and misappropriation of funds by Hanania Travel against prospective Umrah pilgrims. He has urged the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to intervene in the case to ensure pilgrims’ rights are upheld. ‘We deeply regret the recurrence of this tragedy. Under the new law, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah is required to actively seek solutions,’ Hidayat told reporters on Monday, 1 June 2026. ‘He also urged compensation or restitution for the pilgrims, as stipulated in Article 97 of Law No. 14 of 2025.’ Hidayat stated that pilgrims must receive compensation in the form of refunds or service replacements. Meanwhile, the PKS politician demanded that the Umrah and Hajj travel agency face legal penalties. ‘To serve as a deterrent, administrative sanctions including license revocation should be imposed, with the owner facing up to eight years in prison,’ Hidayat said. Previously, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police had named Ahmad Syah Farhan, owner of Hanania Travel, as a suspect in the case. Jakarta Metropolitan Police spokesperson Commissioner Budi Hermanto stated that victims were unable to depart for Umrah after paying tens to hundreds of millions of rupiah. ‘The complainant felt harmed by the suspect ASF after paying money for Umrah travel, but failed to depart on the promised date,’ Budi told reporters on Thursday, 28 May 2026.
