DPR Urges Local Governments to Implement Integrated Waste Management from Upstream to Downstream

Waste management must be carried out in an integrated manner from downstream to upstream and holistically, rather than merely focusing on the partial provision of physical facilities, according to Bambang Pati Jaya, a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) from the Bangka Belitung Islands electoral district.

“Waste management must be handled in an integrated manner from downstream to upstream and holistically,” said Bambang Pati Jaya during a Socialisation event on Waste Handling and B3 Waste Management Emergencies in Tanjungpandan, Belitung, on Tuesday.

He stated that waste management cannot be reduced solely to the procurement of bins, collection vehicles, or final disposal sites (TPA).

This holistic approach, he continued, is increasingly urgent given the Ministry of Environment’s plan to close 250 open dumping system TPA sites across Indonesia.

“Including in the Bangka Belitung Islands region, to transition to an isolated management system that meets standards,” said Bambang Pati Jaya.

Although the proposed budget allocation is still in the technical discussion stage with Bappenas, Bambang emphasised that waste management in both large cities and small waste-producing regions such as Belitung requires an infrastructure approach tailored to the characteristics and capacity of each region.

“Moreover, Belitung is a tourism destination, so waste management indeed requires greater effort,” said Bambang Pati Jaya.
