The Speaker of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani has questioned the Telegram issued by Armed Forces Commander General Agus Subiyanto regarding Alert Status 1 as an anticipatory response to the United States-Israel conflict with Iran.

Puan stated that the DPR would task Commission I to summon the Armed Forces Commander to discuss the reasons for implementing Alert Status 1.

“Regarding Alert Status 1, we will ask the relevant commission to question the TNI about this matter,” Puan said after leading a plenary session opening the fourth parliamentary term at Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday 10 March.

According to Puan, readiness is rightfully the duty and responsibility of law enforcement and the TNI regarding domestic security and defence situations. However, she questioned the urgency of issuing a Telegram that specifically establishes Alert Status 1 under current conditions.

“If such a letter is then issued in a situation like this, perhaps we need to question whether it was necessary or not,” she said.

Therefore, Puan said, the TNI must provide a concrete explanation of the basis for issuing the Telegram.

“It would be better if the TNI provided a concrete or clear explanation, which will then be asked through the relevant commission,” she said.

The Commander’s instruction was contained in TNI Commander Telegram No. TR/283/2026, signed by the TNI Commander’s Operations Assistant Lieutenant General Bobby Rinal Makmun on 1 March 2026.

The letter contained seven instructions for the force to begin alert status by preparing a series of strategic steps domestically should escalation from the Iran conflict with the United States and Israel persist.

In addition to putting personnel on alert, the TNI Strategic Intelligence Agency (Bais) was also tasked with instructing defence attachés of the Republic of Indonesia in affected conflict countries to map and identify the status of Indonesian citizens and prepare evacuation plans if necessary.

Bais was instructed to coordinate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Indonesian embassies and relevant authorities based on escalation in the Middle East region.
