DPR to Safari Non-Parliamentary Parties During Recess to Discuss Election Bill

Commission II of the DPR is said to be planning visits to non-parliamentary parties to discuss the Election Bill during the parliamentary recess over the coming month until mid-August.

Deputy Speaker of the DPR, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, said that through these visits, the DPR will continue to gather aspirations before the bill is formally deliberated.

“During the recess, we will — Commission II will visit non-parliamentary parties to receive input on the Election Bill,” said Dasco at the parliamentary complex on Tuesday (21 July).

In addition to non-parliamentary parties, the visits will also extend to several election watchdog organisations.

According to Dasco, the aim of the outreach is to ensure the future Election Bill is not subject to further judicial review challenges at the Constitutional Court (MK).

“We want to avoid more judicial reviews, so that decisions from judicial reviews do not become confusing. Because one decision is final and binding, then it is challenged again with another judicial review, final and binding again, yet there are several differences and similarities between them,” he said.

A number of parties have urged that the Election Bill be deliberated promptly, given that its procedural stages are set to begin in early October.

However, Commission II of the DPR admitted it has yet to receive the green light from the DPR leadership to begin official deliberations with the government.

Chair of Commission II, Rifqinizamy Karsayuda, revealed that he had asked the DPR leadership directly during a closed meeting in January 2026 when the bill could begin to be formally deliberated through the formation of a working committee (Panja).

However, according to Rifqi, the DPR leadership asked Commission II to wait. He did not specify which DPR leader was meant. It is understood that the DPR currently has five leaders: Puan Maharani of PDIP as Speaker, and four deputy speakers: Sufmi Dasco Ahmad (Gerindra), Saan Mustopa (NasDem), Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal (PKB), and Sari Yuliati (Golkar).

“I asked the DPR leadership whether the working committee should be formed now, or whether we must wait for the right political momentum and legislative momentum — we of course defer to the rules and mechanisms in place in the DPR,” said Rifqi during a discussion at UIN Jakarta campus on Tuesday (7 July).

“The answer was ‘wait’. When I asked when, the answer was again ‘wait’,” added the NasDem politician.
